Today, in honor of National Cereal Day, we’re focusing on some fun facts about something Americans consume 101 pounds of each year. That’s an astonishing amount.
Other fun facts thanks to our friends at Mashable:
- Cheerios were originally called CheeriOats, but due to a trademark dispute with Quaker, they had to change it. That’s okay, Cheerios is more fun anyway.
- Rice Krispies mascots Snap, Crackle and Pop briefly had a fourth brother named Pow in early 1950. Turned out he had a wheat allergy and had to leave the group.
- Children in the ’70s had red poop from eating Franken Berry Cereal. Nasty, right? That red dye’ll do it every time.
- Corn Flakes were developed to discourage intimacy. Truth. Michigan doctor Dr. John Henry Kellogg invented the classic cereal while developing a dietary plan for his patients at the Black Creek Sanitarium. Kellogg believed spicy foods increased sexual desire, and prescribed his patients a diet of bland foods to curb it.
